--Born on this date in 1748, in London, England, philosopher and economist, Jeremy Bentham. He is remembered for establishing the doctrine of utilitarianism, which argues that "the useful is the good" and supports the idea that the greatest happiness for the majority, is the standard by which we should live.

--Born on this date in 1809, in Rockbridge County, Virginia, American inventor, Cyrus Hall McCormick. He is remembered for inventing the first commercially successful mechanical harvester, along with subsequent upgrades and improvements to the machine.

--Born on this date in 1820, in Adams, Massachusetts, American reformer and civil rights activist, Susan Brownell Anthony. She worked tirelessly for over five decades to secure the right to vote for women.
