--Born on this date in 1902, in Detroit, Michigan, American aviator, Charles Lindbergh. Lindbergh is remembered as being the first individual to fly solo, nonstop across the Atlantic. His single-engine plane, the Spirit of Saint Louis left New York City on May 20, 1957, and landed near Paris, France, 33 hours and 32 minutes later.
--Born on this date in 1913, in Tuskegee, Alabama, civil rights activist, Rosa Louise Parks. Parks is remembered for refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama bus to a white man. In 1996, then President Bill Clinton awarded Parks the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest honor bestowed by the Federal Government on a civilian.
--On this date in 1948, Sri Lanka, then known as Ceylon, gained independence from Great Britain. Ceylon had held the dubious distinction of being the first official British colony since 1802 and had been under British rule since around 1796.
--On this date in 2007, the Indianapolis Colts defeated the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI> The game was played at Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens Florida. Peyton Manning, the quarterback of the Colts was named the Super Bowl's Most Valuable Player. It was Manning's first Super Bowl victory to date.
