A Date from History

On this date in 1788, Maryland became the seventh state to ratify the Constitution of the United States. Delaware was the first when that state ratified the constitution on December 7 of the prior year, (1787). Delaware was followed by Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusets, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island, respectively. However, almost three years passed between the time of Delaware's ratification and that of Rhode Island. Although Rhode Island was the last of the original 13 colonies to ratify the Constitution, the small state had been the first to declare independence from Great Britain in 1776. (The Constitution was narrowly approved in the state of New York, by a vote of 30 to 27.)
