On this date in 1790, Rhode Island ratified the Constitution of the United States and was officially admitted to the Union as the 13th US state. Rhode Island had been the first of the 13 original colonies to declare independence from Great Britain in 1776, but was the last of the 13 to ratify the Constitution.
On this date in 1848, Wisconsin was admitted to the United States as its 30th state. Due to the state's great cheese production, it is oftentimes called the Cheese Captial of the United States.
