Sports History Bit: Pontiac Silverdome

The Pontiac Silverdome opened in August of 1975 and was the home field of the Detroit Lions of the NFL from that time until 2001. (The Lions then began playing home games at Ford Field in 2002.) The NBA Detroit Pistons also called the Pontiac Silverdome home from 1978 to 1988, playing their final game there as part of 1988 NBA Finals. In addition to the Lions and Pistons, the Michigan High School Athletic Association state finals in football were held in the Silverdome from 1976 until 2004; and the Michigan Panthers of the USFL called the dome home in 1983-1984.

Other major sporting events held in the Silverdome have included four contests in the 1994 World Cup; the NCAA college football bowls -- Cherry Bowl, 1984, 1985, and Motor City Bowl from 1997-2001; the 1979 NBA All-Star Game; the 1991 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament Midwest Regionals; and Super Bowl XVI in 1982, in which Ray Wersching kicked a record-tying four field goals.

The Super Bowl at Pontiac resulted in the first NFL championship of the San Francisco 49ers. Quarterback Joe Montana received Super Bowl MVP honors for his performance there.
