The mega blockbuster Avatar, released in December 2009, garnered one billion dollars of box office receipts faster than any movie prior in history. Industry experts say the film also holds the distinction of being the most expensive ever made; totalling a half a billion dollars. Written and directed by the award-winning, James Cameron, Avatar is expected to pass his last major feature film and the greatest megahit of all time, to date, in terms of box office sales, the 1997 blockbuster Titanic.
Avatar displays major innovations in computer-generated animation for the big screen, as the majority of the movie consists of these generated images; and the film was shot in 3-D.
Cameron, a native of Canada, has also written and directed in whole or part, such hits as The Terminator (1984), Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985); and Aliens (1986), among others.
Among Cameron's projects in development and those upcoming, are rumors of possibly two sequels to Avatar.
