Science Students -- A Logic Problem

A summer seminar for college science majors was held at Louisville. Students from across the Commonwealth of Kentucky gathered for the event. The four students in our group each drove from a different Kentucky city. (One came from Shelbyville.)

From the clues given below, determine each student's first and last names, (one was Davis), the city from which each came, the branch of science each studies, and the color of each student's car.

  • The chemistry student from Paducah is not the one surnamed Smith.
  • The biology student drives the black car.
  • The geology student does not drive the white car.
  • Rachel is not from Covington.
  • Mary drives the blue car; her last name is not Smith.
  • The physics student drove the silver car and is surnamed Johnson.
  • Tom is from Richmond; he does not drive a silver car.
  • Edward does not drive a white car, nor is he the student from Covington.
  • The student surnamed Jones studies geology.
