Pool House Renovation -- A Logic Problem

The Taylor family had a small renovation job done to their pool house while on vacation. They left a neighbor in charge of paying the six contractors on their behalf, one of which was a landscaper. When they returned, the neighbor had mixed up the records. They knew the total paid out was $5000, all in even dollar amounts, but were unsure of who got paid what amount. (No two contractors received the same amount.) One contractor received $400. Can you save them a trip to the bank by determining each contractor's name, the trade each worked at, and the amount of money each was paid?

  • Mr. James was paid exactly three times more than the cleanup contractor, but only one-half as much as the carpenter.
  • Mr. McDowell received $1000 for his work.
  • Ms. Clark did the painting. She did not received the least amount of money.
  • The electrician was paid exactly twice as much as the cleanup contractor, but only a third of what the carpenter received.
  • Ms. Roberts was paid exactly twice as much as Ms. Brown and Mr. Todd combined.
  • The contractor that received the least amount of money was paid $300.
  • The plumber was paid $100 more than Mr. James and $400 more than Ms. Brown.
