The country of Haiti is located on the western third of the island of Hispaniola. The Dominican Republic occupies the eastern part.
Haiti is mainly mountainous with some plains.
Haiti's climate is tropical and is the region is subject to hurricanes and strong tropical storms.

Haiti declared its independence from French rule in 1804.
The country was devastated by an massive earthquake in January 2010. Recovery is expected to take years.
In Haitian currency, one gourde equals 100 centimes.
