Location

Ecuador is located on the western coast of the South American continent and is bounded by Colombia on the north, Peru on the east and the south and the Pacific Ocean on the west.

Geographic Features

The Andes Mountains extend north to south through the middle of Ecuador. In the Amazon basin, jungle prevails.

Climate

Ecuador experiences an equatorial climate in the Amazon basin, temperate in the Andes, and hot along the coast.

Historic Fact

The Galapagos Islands, which Charles Darwin studied in 1856, belong to Ecuador. The island group lies approximately 610 miles (970 km) to the west of mainland Ecuador.
