Location

Located in the Caribbean, north of Saint Lucia, Dominica is the second largest of the Windward Islands.

Geographic Features

The island is home to forested mountains, hot springs and geysers.

Climate

Dominica has a tropical climate and is subject to hurricanes.

According to the CIA World Factbook1, the Sisserou Parrot on
Dominica's flag, pictured above, is unique to the country. The
ten stars on the flag represent the nation's ten administrative
districts, called parishes. The red disc represent social justice.
The color black is for the African heritage of the majority of the
population. Green represents the abundant vegetation; yellow
represents abundant sunshine; and the cross is used as a
Christian symbol.

Formation

Formed in 1978 after gaining independence from Britain, the country is a popular vacation spot. Tourism to "Nature Island," so named because of its natural beauty, has been steadily increasing in recent years.
