LocationColombia, the only South American country with coastlines on both the Atlantic (Caribbean Sea) and Pacific oceans, is located in the northwestern-most region of the South American continent. Colombia is bounded by the two oceans and the isthmus of Panama on the west and north, by Venezuela to the east, and Brazil, Peru and Ecuador to the south. Geographic FeaturesThe northern-most regions of the Andes Mountains divide Colombia into the western coastal plains and the heavily-forested east. In the south are the headstreams of the great Amazon River. ClimateThere are two wet seasons in eastern Colombia. The coastal plains are hot and humid with cooler temperatures in the highland regions. |

Once a viceroyalty of Spain, the country gained independence in 1819.
