The ranking of large cities based on population will differ among multiple sources depending on the criteria used to determine the area's boundaries. When using the metropolitan area to define a city's population, Tokyo, Japan ranks as the world's largest city. Another Asian city, Seoul, South Korea, ranks second.

The largest city, (again based on the metropolitan area), in the Western Hemisphere is Mexico City, Mexico, followed closely by New York City in the United States. Mexico City ranks third in the world statistics and New York City, fourth. Other large cities in our hemisphere include Sao Paulo, Brazil; Los Angeles, (California), United States; and Buenos Aires, Argentina.

London, England is the largest metropolitan area in Europe, but just does make the top twenty in world rank.

In the puzzle above, several sources were consulted and twenty cities that consistently appeared in each source were used for the word list.
