Geography Bits: Where Are They?

The Amazon River in South America is the second longest river in the world. The Amazon flows from Peru, across the country of Brazil and empties into the Atlantic Ocean.

The Amur River defines a border between Russia and China.

The Brahmaputra is an Asian river that flows into the Bay of Bengal.

The Congo River is a major African waterway. One of the world's longest rivers, it flows through the Democratic Republic of Congo into the South Atlantic.

The Danube is the second longest European river. The Danube flows into the Black Sea.

The Darling is an Australian river and a tributary of the Murray River. (See below.)

The Euphrates River in southwest Asia flows into the Persian Gulf. The area around the Euphrates River, known in ancient times as Mesopotamia, was the site of several great early civilizations.

The Ganges is an Asian river that rises in the Himalayas and empties into the Bay of Bengal.

The Huang He, or Yellow River, is a major river of Asia in northern China. It flows generally eastward into the Yellow Sea.

The Indus is an Asian river that flows into the Arabian Sea.

The Irrawaddy is the main river of Myanmar (Burma). It rises in the north and flows south through the length of Myanmar (Burma) to empty into the Andaman Sea.

Irtysh is an Asian river and a major tributary of the Ob River. (Note: On maps and in textbooks, the two waterways are often combined and shown as the Ob-Irtysh River System.)

The Lena River is in Siberia Russia. It empties into the Laptev Sea.

Mackenzie-Peace-Finlay is a Canadian river system that empties into the Beaufort Sea.

The Mekong River flows through southern Vietnam and empties into the South China Sea.

The Murray is a river in southeast Australia. It empties into the Indian Ocean at Adelaide.

The Niger River, located in western Africa, flows into the South Atlantic.

The longest river in the world is the Nile, which begins in east central Africa and flows through the countries of Uganda, Sudan, and Egypt before emptying into the Meditrranean Sea.

The Ob is a major river of western Siberia. It flows to the Gulf of Ob and the Kara Sea. (The Ob'-Irtysh River System flows through Russia, Kazakhstan, and China.)

The Orinoco, in South America, empties into the South Atlantic.

The Paraguay (or Paraguai) River is in South America. It joins the Parana River at the northern border of Argentina.

Parana, (or Rio Parana) is a tributary of the Rio de la Plata in South America.

The Pearl River, (or Zhu Jiang) is an Asian river that empties into the South China Sea.

The Salween River is found in southeast Asia and empties into the Gulf of Martaban, an arm of the Andaman Sea.

The Tigris River is a tributary of the Euphrates River. (See above.)

The Ural River flows through southern Russia and empties into the Caspian Sea. The Ural forms part of the traditional boundary between the continents of Europe and Asia.

The Volga, Europe's longest river is a Russian river that flows into the Caspian Sea.

The Yangtze River is the third longest river in the world and the longest river of Asia. The Yangtze River begins in the Tibetan Plateau of China and flows eastward, emptying into the East China Sea near Shanghai. The Yangtze separates what is historically known as northern and southern China.
