Geography Bits: Rivers

The longest river in the United States is the mighty Mississippi. For more information on the Mississippi River and its tributaries, visit our River Pages.

Another of the longest U.S. rivers is the Rio Grande, which rises in the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado and runs in a southeasterly direction for almost 2000 miles before emptying into the Gulf of Mexico at Brownsville, Texas. The Rio Grande forms the border between the U.S. and Mexico along the southwest boundary of Texas. The Rio Grande ranks in the top thirty longest rivers of the world.

Arguably the most important river in the southwestern United States is the Colorado. The Colorado River is the major source of water for the area, which receives sparse amounts on average in yearly rainfall. The river begins at Grand Lake, Colorado and flows in a general southwest direction, (picking up tributaries as it goes), through the states of Colorado and Utah, then through a portion of Arizona, forming the border between Arizona with Nevada and Arizona with California, along the way. The Colorado River then leaves the boundaries of the United States and enters Mexico, eventually emptying into the Gulf of California, an arm of the Pacific Ocean between Baja California and Mexico's mainland.

(Note: There is a another smaller "Colorado" River, in the state of Texas.)
