Geography Bits: The Oldest State Capital

Three of the oldest state capitals in the United States are Santa Fe, New Mexico Boston, Massachusetts, and Annapolis, Maryland. Santa Fe was established in 1610 to be the capital of New Mexico, which was a Spanish colony at the time. Santa Fe is the second oldest city in the United States, to be settled by Europeans, after only Saint Augustine, Florida. (Albuquerque is New Mexico's largest city.)

Boston, Massachusetts was settled in 1625 and became incorporated as the capital of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. Boston is also, presently the largest city in the state of Massachusetts.

Annapolis was established as the provincial capital of Maryland in 1694. The State House, an historic landmark is the oldest U.S. State Capitol in continous use. (Baltimore is Maryland's largest city.)
