The first crossword published in the United States was created by Arthur Wynne, a journalist with New York World. The publication printed it in their Sunday supplement on December 21, 1913 and within a few years, the crossword craze had taken the world by storm.

Today, the crossword puzzle is the most popular word game in the world. Millions of people work at least one crossword daily. The most esteemed, (and some say most challenging), crossword in the world is published by the New York Times. The Times daily crossword, which first appeared in 1942, has been edited by puzzle master and cruciverbalist extraordinaire, Will Shortz, since 1993. However, the best selling crossword books in the United States contain "Easy" crosswords like those offered on this web site. Generally, the solver of "Easy" crosswords can complete the grid in a few minutes and move on to the next puzzle. In an easy crossword, the clues/definitions are straightforward and allow the solver to depend on their knowledge of vocabulary without trying to decipher the "wit" of the constructor.
