Did You Know? (44 Across) The first Ferris wheel was designed and developed by civil engineer, George Washington Gale Ferris for the World's Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893. This first large ride stood 264 feet high, weighed 1200 tons, and could carry 2160 riders in its 36 pendulum cars. Following the exposition in Chicago, entertainment centers with carnival rides became a standard feature at fairs, from the local county gathering to world fairs on the international level. In the spring of 2008, a 541 feet high Ferris wheel was opened to the public in Singapore. The Bejing Great Wheel, (under construction), will be the tallest wheel in the world at its completion, scheduled for 2009.
