(8 Down) The word pseudo derives from the Greek "pseudes" meaning "false". In modern usage of the word, as an adjective pseudo means: "not genuine; false; counterfeit, but having the appearance of the real thing". When used as noun it generally refers to "a person who deceives and/or pretends".
A pseudonym is a general term applied to "alias, pen name, and nom de plume". However, an alias is a name taken to conceal one's true identity, whereas pen name and nom de plume refer to a fictitious name used by an author of a literary work. As a combining form pseudo- means "false; fake; pretended"; as in pseudoscience which indicates a science built on false assumptions.
