35th Annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament

It’s time to plan for the nation’s largest crossword puzzle tournament, the 35th Annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament to be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 16, 17, 18 at the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge, in Brooklyn, New York.

The Marriott is offering tournament contestants a discount on accommodations if booked before March 7, 2012. After that date the hotel cannot guarantee the crossword tournament group rate.

Special crossword puzzles are made just for the tournament and a selection of prizes are offered including the first prize of $5,000 in Division A, which is open to all contestants.

6th Annual Silicon Valley Puzzle Fest

Get ready for the Silicon Valley Puzzle Fest to be held January 28 and 29, 2012 at the Morgan Hill Library in Morgan Hill, California. The event begins at 10:00 a.m. and runs until 5:00 p.m.

Will Shortz, New York Times puzzle editor and Thomas Snyder, Sudoku world champion will provide puzzles for the tournament competitions. Puzzles include not only crosswords and Sudoku, but logic puzzles and additional word puzzles. Workshops on puzzling will be held on Saturday, January 28.

World Puzzle Competitions

World Puzzle Championship

At the recently held 20th World Puzzle Championship in Eger, Hungary, Team USA came away the winners. This victory marked the 13th time Team USA has won the competition.

The German team came in second and Japan placed third. Team USA tallied 20,447 points in the competition, Germany was close behind with 20,304 points, and the Japanese team scored 18,026 points.

American Palmer Mebane won the individual championship, defeating the seven-time world champion Ulrich Voigt of Germany. Mebane is the first American to win in more than a decade.

Mebane, a student at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, maintains a blog, Melon’s Puzzles, where you can explore the logic puzzles he creates.

Sudoku Championship

In the 6th World Sudoku Championship competition, also held in Eger, Hungary the November 6-10, 2011. American Thomas Snyder, a perennial world puzzle champ, took individual honors. Germany won the team competition. The Czech Republic came in second and Team USA placed third.
