Below are simple definitions to four of the "w, x, y, z" English language verbs used in the puzzle above:

  • waddle To walk with short steps causing the body to sway from one side to the other. 2. Walk unsteadily. 3. To move clumsily. Synonyms: coggle, doddler, paddle, toddle, totter. [Derived from "wade".]
  • wangle 1. Achieve something by means of trickery or dishonest methods. 2. To get something using indirect and sometimes deceitful methods; to obtain by contrivance. Similar words: contrive, engineer, finagle, fix. 3. To manipulate accounts or records, usually deceitfully. 3. Fake or falsify. Synonyms: cook, fake, falsify, finagle, fudge, manage, manipulate, misrepresent. [Thought to be derived from "waggle".]
  • whet 1. To make a feeling or desire more keen or eager. Synonyms: augment, awaken, increase, stimulate. 2. To sharpen the cutting edge or blade of a tool or weapon, usually by the friction of rubbing it on a stone. Synonyms: file, grind, hone, sharpen. [Derived from Old English hwettan.]
  • zizz To take brief nap. [Derived from the 20th century usage of zzz or z's to indicate sleep.]

Note: Many times in colloquial English use, one will see the words "xerox" and "xray" used as verbs. It would be improper to include them as such in the puzzle above, as both words should always be capitalized in proper English usage and furthermore "xray" should be both capitalized and hyphenated in proper usage as in "X-ray". The word Xerox is a trademarked company name and should always be capitalized in proper English usage, even though it has found it way into everyday language as a common verb, as a synonym for "copy".
