Below are simple definitions to ten of the "e" English language verbs used in the puzzle above:

  • earmark 1. Give or assign a share of money or time to a particular person or cause. 2. To select and set aside something for a particular purpose, such as money. 3. To mark the ear of a farm animal with an identification symbol. Synonyms: allocate, assign, allot, set aside, put aside, tag, save, reserve.
  • eddy 1. Flow in a circular current, of liquids. 2. Flow against the current, or make something flow in this way. Synonym: churn, spin, spiral, twirl, whirl.
  • efface 1. To remove or erase something by wearing away or rubbing out, such as written characters. 2. To act in an inconspicuous manner, especially because of shyness or modesty; behave humbly. 3. Remove completely from recognition or memory. Synonyms: cancel out, delete, eradicate, erode, obliterate, rub out, smooth away, wear away, wipe out (informal). [Derived from the French effacer "wipe out, destroy".]
  • effectuate To do, cause or accomplish something; produce Similar words: conclude, accomplish. [Derived from French, from Latin effectus "accomplish".]
  • effervesce 1. To produce or give off tiny bubbles of gas, as water charged with carbon dioxide. 2. To escape as tiny bubbles. 3. To behave in a lively, high-spirited, or highly exited way. Synonyms: bubble, fizz, foam, froth, hiss, sparkle. [Derived from the Latin ex- "out", plus fervescere "to boil".]
  • electroplate To coast a surface with metal by electrodeposition. Similar: coat, cover, laminate, shield.
  • elide 1. Leave or strike out. 2. To omit a vowel, consonant, or syllable of a word, to leave out part of a sentence or phrase. 3. To suppress, omit, or ignore something. Synonyms: delete, ignore, leave out, omit, run together. [Derived from the Latin elidere "strike out".]
  • elucidate 1. Make free from confusion or ambiguity; make clear. 2. To explain or clarify something clearly. Synonyms: clarify, explain, expound, illuminate, spell out. [Derived from the Latin elucidare "make clear".]
  • emanate 1. To flow forth from a source; issue. Synonyms: arise, derive, originate, stem, spring. 2. To emit, send out, or give out something such as rays, or even information. Synonyms: emit, give out, ooze, radiate. [Derived from the Latin emanare "flow out, arise".]
  • emblazon 1. To adorn something such as clothing with bright colors or a symbol. Synonyms: adorn, decorate, embellish, embroider, inscribe, ornament. 2. To celebrate somebody or something, or make somebody or something famous. Synonyms: celebrate, extol, glorify, honor, praise, publicize.
