Below are simple definitions to ten of the "d" English language verbs used in the puzzle above:

  • dally 1. To act in a playful manner; frolic. 2. To trifle or deal lightly with something or somebody; consider not very seriously. 3. To dawdle, loiter, or waste time. 4. Behave carelessly or indifferently. Synonyms: dawdle, hang around, linger, loiter, hang around, waste time, dilly-dally. Antonym: hurry. [Derived from Old French dalier "to converse, chatter".]
  • dandle 1. To move a baby or small child gently in a rocking motion in your arms or on your knees. Synonyms: bounce, dance, jiggle, jog, rock. 2. To caress or pet somebody or something, especially a baby. Synonyms: caress, cuddle, fondle, nuzzle, pet, pamper. [Derived from the Italian dandolare.]
  • dapple To make spotted or variegated; color with streaks or patches or spots of a different color or with light and shade, or be marked in this way. Synonyms: cloud, dot, dust, fleck, mark, mottle, spatter, spot, stipple. [When used as a NOUN, dapple refers to: Spots or patches of a different color, especially on a horse. [Word origin uncertain.]
  • daunt Frighten or intimidate someone; cause to lose courage; cow. Synonyms: deter, discourage, dishearten, frighten, intimidate, overawe, overwhelm, subdue, unnerve. Antonym: encourage. [Derived from Latin domare "to tame."]
  • debark 1. To go ashore from a ship; (same as disembark). To unload something from a vehicle. Synonyms: alight, arrive, disembark, go ashore, land, set down. [Derived from the French debarquer "get out of a boat".] 2. To strip the bark from wood. [Derived from the French de- "away" plus barque "ship".]
  • debouch 1. To come forth from an enclosed or confined area into more open terrain. 2. Pass out or emerge; especially of rivers. 3. To widen out, or flow out, from a valley or ravine into a broader area (refers to a geographic feature such as a flow of water). Synonyms: emerge, exit, issue, move out, spread out.
  • deign 1. Do something that one considers to be below one's dignity. 2. To think it befitting oneself to do something in a way that shows that it is considered a great favor. Synonyms: agree, condescend, lower yourself, stoop. [Derived from the Latin dignare "deem worthy".]
  • dither 1. Make a fuss; be agitated. 2. To be in a state of nervous excitement, or behave in an indecisive way. Synonyms: dawdle, hesitate, shilly-shally, vacillate, waver.
  • docket 1. To attach or give a summary of something; summarize. 2. (LAW) To enter a legal case in the calendar of future cases. 3. (LAW) To summarize a court case and enter the summary in the appropriate register. 4. To label a parcel with a tag giving the contents or delivery details. Synonyms: label, tag.
  • dollop To spoon a quantity of a thick liquid or a soft liquid such as ice cream or cream. (As a NOUN, dollop means: a small measure, usually of food.)
