Places to Go and Things to Know: New Jersey
Ellis Island was long an entry point for immigrants entering the United States for the first time, between 1892 and 1954, when it was the headquarters of a US immigration district. Ellis Island is now part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument. Managed by the National Park Service, Ellis Island, which encompasses three islands joined by causeways, is located in New York Harbor with the majority (the man-made areas) lying in Jersey City, New Jersey, and the remainder, (the natural island), lying within the boundaries of New York City. Records indicate that approximately 12 million immigrants were processed at the facility. A museum located there now displays many of those records and artifacts from the era.
For information on the historical displays and touring opportunities, visit the National Park Service web page: Ellis Island.
