The Homestead National Monument of America marks the first land claim to a homestead in the United States acquired as a result of the Homestead Act of 1862. The Homestead Act offered settlers title to 160 acres of land after they had maintained a residence and improved the plot for five years. Located northwest of Beatrice, Nebraska, the monument marks the site settled by the Daniel Freeman family, who Congress credits with being the first to claim land under the Homestead Act. The area is protected under the management of the National Park Service.
