Large quantities of lead are used in the manufacturing industry and the state of Missouri leads the nation in production of this common metal. As early as 1720, the French were mining Missouri lead. The area known as the Old Lead Belt consists of more than 1000 miles of abandoned mine tunnels and is part of the Missouri Mines State Historic Site. Missouri also produces a significant portion of the nation's limestone, crushed stone, granite, sandstone, zinc, lime, and the mineral barite, which is used in oil and gas drilling operations.
