The historic Kankakee River rises near South Bend, Indiana and flows west and southwest into northern Illinois, picking up tributaries along the way until it joins the Des Plaines at Joliet. The Des Plaines rises in southern Wisconsin and flows southward into the state of Illinois. When the Des Plaines joins the Kankakee, they form the Illinois River. The Illinois River is an important tributary of the mighty Mississippi.
