Below are simple definitions to five of the "w, x, y, and z" English language adjectives used in the puzzle above:

  • wanton 1. Lacking reason or provocation. Similar words: gratuitous, meaningless, motiveless, reckless, unjustifiable, uncalled-for. 2. Done out of a desire to cause harm. 3. Unrestrained; characterized by greed and extravagance; spent wastefully. Synonyms: excessive, extravagant, heedless, unreasonable. 4. Lacking discipline.
  • winsome Charming, especially in a child-like or with a naive, innocent quality. Similar words: charming, fetching, pleasant, sweet, winning. [Derived from the Old English word wyn "joy".]
  • wonky 1. Not to be relied on to function correctly. 2. Inclined to shake as from weakness or defect. Similar words: insecure, unreliable, unsteady.
  • xenophobic Having abnormal fear or hatred of the strange or foreign, especially in a chauvinistic and intolerant way. [Derives from xenophobia: an irrational fear of foreigners or strangers, their customs and traditions. [Xenophobia derives from the Greek word for "stranger", xenos.
  • yuppie Conservative and traditional; well-groomed and tailored. [Derived from young urban professional, after hippie and yippie.
