Below are simple definitions to nine of the less common "pe" English adjectives used in the puzzle above:

  • pecuniary 1. Relating to or involving money. 2. Involving a financial penalty such as a fine. Synonyms: monetary, financial, fiscal, economic, commercial, budgetary. [Derives from Latin pecuniairus, from pecunia "money, wealth in cattle"; pecus is Latin for "cattle".]
  • pedagogic Synonyms: educational, school, scholastic, academic, pedagogical, teaching, informative, instructional, didactic. (The NOUN pedagogy is defined as: The activities of educating or instructing or teaching; activities that impart knowledge or skill; the science or profession of teaching.) [Derives from Latin, from Greek pais, paidos "child", plus agogos "leader".]
  • pedantic 1. Marked by a narrow focus on or display of learning especially its trivial aspects. 2. Overly concerned with what are thought to be correct rules and details. Synonyms: donnish, finicky, plodding, obscure, arcane, dull, doctrinaire, sophistic, hairsplitting, nitpicking, fussy.
  • pedestrian Lacking wit or imagination; dull, ordinary, unimaginative, or uninspired. Other synonyms include: earthbound, prosaic, prosy. [Derived from Latin pedester "on foot".] When used as a NOUN, pedestrian is defined as: A person who travels on foot.
  • pedigree Having a list of ancestors as proof of being a purebred animal; thoroughbred, full-bloodied, pureblood. [Derived from Middle French pie de grue "a crane's foot"; from a three line mark denoting succession in pedigrees.]
  • pejorative Expressing criticism or disapproval. Similar words: disapproving, judgmental, harsh, scornful, derogatory, uncomplimentary, negative, depreciatory, critical, sneering, sniping, disparaging, belittling, downgrading, depreciative. Antonym: positive. [Derived from Late Latin pejorare "to make worse".]
  • pendant Synonyms for pendant when used as an adjective include: undecided, incomplete, unresolved, awaiting, pending.
  • penultimate Second to last in a series or sequence. Synonym: next-to-last. [Derived from Latin paene "almost", plus ULTIMATE.]
  • peptic 1. Relating or or promoting digestion. 2. Relating to or involving the stomach. [Derives from Greek pepsis "digestion".]
