- median 1. Relating to or situated in or extending toward
the middle. Synonyms: middle, average, intermediate, medium, middling,
moderate. 2. (Statistics) Relating to or constituting the middle value of an
ordered set of values (or the average of the middle two in an even-numbered
set). Synonym: average. 3. (Zoology) Lying in the plane that divides a
bilaterally symmetrical animal into right and left halves. [Derives from
French, from Latin: medianus median, medius middle.]
- medieval 1. Relating to, involving, belonging to, or
typical of the Middle Ages in Europe. Synonym: gothic. 2. Old-fashioned,
especially because lacking modern supposedly enlightened attitudes. Synonyms:
feudal, primitive, out-of-date, old-fashioned, unenlightened, barbaric, passe,
benighted. Antonym: modern. 3. Characteristic of the time of chivalry and
knighthood in the Middle Ages. Synonyms: chivalric, knightly.
- meditative Persistently or morbidly thoughtful. Synonyms:
thoughtful, brooding, musing, reflective, contemplative, pensive,
introspective, preoccupied, serious, absorbed, lost in thought, brooding,
wistful. Antonym: active.
- mega Impressive; extremely enjoyable, excellent, or
large. Other synonyms include: plentiful, profuse, copious, jumbo, mammoth,
super (informal).
- megalomaniac A pathological power-hungry egotist.
Synonyms: self-important, dictatorial, tyrannical, despotic, totalitarian,
autocratic.
- mellifluous Pleasant and soothing to listen to, and sweet
or rich in tone. Synonyms: smooth, flowing, melodious, pleasant, honeyed,
silky, sweet, mellow, rich, soothing, dulcet. Antonym: jarring. [Derived from
Latin mellifluus "flowing like honey"; mel is the Latin word
for honey.]
- melodramatic 1. Behaving, speaking, done or said in a way
that is more dramatic, shocking, or highly emotional than the situation
demands; exaggeratedly theatrical. 2. Characteristic of acting or a stage
performance; often affected. 3. Relating to or typical of melodrama. Synonyms:
histrionic, overdramatic, overemotional, exaggerated, sensational, theatrical,
acting up, over-the-top (UK, informal). Antonym: low-key. [The NOUN melodrama
derives from French, from Greek melos song, plus drama
drama.]
- mendacious 1. Having lied in the past, or given to lying
at any time. 2. Deliberately and intentionally untrue. Synonyms: untruthful,
false, unreliable, dishonest, deceitful, spurious.
- menial Relating to or involving work that requires little
skill or training, is not interesting, and confers low social status on
somebody doing it. Synonyms; boring, tedious, basic, lowly, humble. Antonym:
skilled.
- mercantile 1. Used for trade or by merchants, or
characteristic of merchants or trading. 2. Profit oriented. Synonyms:
mercenary, moneymaking. 3. Relating to or characteristic of mercantilism.
