Below are definitions to the less common "h" adjectives used in the puzzle above:
- hackneyed Made commonplace by frequent use; ordinary and
unimaginative; trite.
- haggard Having a worn, gaunt, or wild look, as from
fatigue, worry, hunger, etcetera. 2. Wild or intractable. Synonyms: exhausted,
faded, fatigued, worn. [Derives from Old French hagard wild.
- hangdog 1. Sneaky, furtive, or degraded in manner or
appearance. 2. Having an expression that indicates guilt or sadness. Synonyms:
dejected, downcast, furtive, guilty, humiliated, shamefaced, sheepish,
wretched.
- haywire 1. Functioning erratically, or not functioning at
all. 2. Behaving unpredictably. Broken, erratic, nonfunctional, out of order,
wild.
- heady 1. Tending to affect the senses. Synonyms:
aromatic, intoxicating, pungent, spicy. 2. Causing or involving a feeling of
energy, confidence, elation. Synonyms: exciting, exhilarating, invigorating,
stimulating, thrilling. 3. Impulsive and rash in behavior. Synonyms: hasty,
impetuous, rash, reckless.
- hemal 1. Pertaining to blood, blood vessels, or the
vascular system. 2. Pertaining to or situated on the side of the body that
contains the heart. [Derives from Greek haima blood.]
- heterodox 1. At variance with accepted or established
doctrines or beliefs. 2. Holding unorthodox beliefs or opinions. [Derives from
the Greek hetero- other + doxa opinion.]
- heuristic 1. Relating to or using a method of teaching
that encourages learners to discover solutions for themselves. 2. Using or
arrived at by a process of trial and error rather than set rules. 3. (Computer
Science) Describes a computer programs that modifies itself in response to the
user. Synonyms: empirical, exploratory, investigative. [Derives from Greek
heuriskein to find out.]
- histrionic 1. Relating to actors or acting. 2.
Overdramatic in reaction or behavior. [Derives from Latin histrio
actor.]
- humdrum Lacking interest, variety, or excitement.
Synonyms: boring, dull, everyday, monotonous, routine, unexciting. (Humdrum
also be used as a noun to signify that which is tedious or dull.)
- hyper (This is a shortening of the word hyperactive.
Its use has become part of everyday vocabulary since the mid-20th century.) 1.
Behaving in an overexcited or excessively active manner. 2. Easily excited, or
having a high-strung temperament. [The prefix "hyper-" means over, above,
excessive.]
