Below are definitions to the less common "f" adjectives used in the puzzle above:
- facetious Intended to be humorous but often silly or
inappropriate.
- facile 1. Requiring little effort; easy to do. 2. Made or
arrived at without any serious thought or depth of feeling and therefore of
little value or significance. 3. Working or done smoothly and easily.
- faithful True or trustworthy in the performance of duty,
the fulfillment of promises or obligations. Synonyms: authentic, believable,
constant, correct, dependable, dedicated, devoted, exact, staunch, true to
life, trustworthy.
- fallow 1. (Used to describe land) Left unseeded after
being plowed; uncultivated. Fallow can also be used as a noun to refer to the
unseeded land itself. Synonyms: uncultivated, unplanted, unseeded, untilled,
unused. 2. Currently inactive but with the possibility of activity or use in
the future. 3. Light yellowish brown.
- feasible 1. Capable of being accomplished. 2. Capable of
being successfully utilized; suitable. 3. Fairly probable; likely. Synonyms:
achievable, likely, possible, practical, realistic, viable.
- fervent 1. Moved by or showing great warmth or intensity,
as of emotion or enthusiasm; ardent. 2. (Poetic) Very hot; burning; glowing as
a result of intense heat. Synonyms: ardent, avid, eager, enthusiastic,
impassioned, intense, keen, passionate, vehement, zealous. [Derives from
Latin: fervere to boil.]
- fey 1. Behaving or talking in unusual, uninhibited ways
that suggest possible psychiatric disorder. 2Acting as if enchanted or under a
spell. 3. Supposedly able to see into the future; clairvoyant. 4. Suggestive
of a sprite. Synonyms: capricious, fanciful, fantastical, irrational,
otherworldly, whimsical [Derives from Old French fae fairy.]
- filial 1. Of, pertaining to, or befitting a son or
daughter. 2. (Genetics) Describes the first generation that results from
crossing two parental lines.
- fiscal Of or pertaining to the treasury or finances of a
government; relating to public revenues; financial. [Derives from French, from
Latin: fiscus purse.]
- florid 1. Having a ruddy color, especially of the type
typical of high blood pressure; flushed with redness. 2. Ornate to an
excessive degree; flowery. [Derives from Latin floridus flowery.]
- fractious 1.Apt to be unruly or rebellious. 2. Easily
annoyed or angered. 3. Irritable and likely to complain or misbehave.
Synonyms: complaining, grumpy, irritable, peevish, restless, touchy.
- friable Easily crumbled or pulverized. Synonyms: brittle,
crumbly, fragile. [Derives from French, from Latin: friare to crumble.]
- furtive 1. Done in secret; surreptitious; stealthy;
clandestine. 2. Evasive; shifty. [Derives from French, from Latin; fur
thief.]
