Below are definitions to nine of the less common "w" nouns used in the puzzle above:

  • wagga: (Australian) A rough blanket made by stitching sacks together. (Named the town, Wagga Wagga, on the Murrumbidgee River in New South Wales, Australia.)
  • wahine: 1. A Hawaiian or Maori woman or wife. 2. An informal Hawaiian term for a young woman surfer.
  • wahoo: 1. A large fast-moving food and game fish of the mackerel family. 2. An elm tree, native to the southeastern United States, that produces crimson pods and seeds, and grows twigs with corky projections resembling wings. Synonyms: Euonymus americanus, strawberry bush. 3. A deciduous bush native to eastern North America; it produces pinkish to purple fruits that split open to reveal scarlet red seeds. Synonyms: burning bush, Euonymus atropurpureus.
  • wakame: An edible brown seaweed used in Japanese and Chinese cuisine.
  • waldo: A dated British word for a remote controlled device.
  • wampum: 1. Decorative beads once used as money; small polished beads made from shells and used by some Native North American peoples as decorative objects, for ceremonial purposes, and in former times as a medium of exchange. 2. Informal term for money.
  • wanigan: 1. A watertight boat equipped with supplies for a lumber camp. 2. A supply chest used in a logging camp. 3. A cabin on runners towed behind a trailer, used as living quarters in Alaska for a work crew. 4. (Regional use in Alaska) an addition built on a trailer house in Alaska for extra space.
  • wannabe: An ambitious and aspiring young person. Synonyms: aspirant, aspirer, hopeful, wannabee.
  • wapiti: A large deer with tall branched antlers; native to the mountains of western North America.
