Below are definitions to eight of the less common "v" nouns used in the puzzle above:

  • vagary: An unpredictable or eccentric change, action, or idea; a sudden desire. Synonyms: caprice, impulse, whim.
  • vagus: Either of the tenth pair of cranial nerves that carry sensory and motor neurons serving the heart, lungs, pharynx, larynx, stomach, intestines, and most of the abdominal viscera. Synonyms: nervus vagus, pneumogastric, pneumogastric nerve, tenth cranial nerve, vagus nerve, wandering nerve.
  • varve: A deposit of sedimentary material.
  • veldt: An area of elevated open grassland, especially in southern Africa. Also, spelled "veld".
  • veleta: A ballroom dance performed in triple time in which partners sometimes dance side by side and sometimes do a quick waltz.
  • verdure: 1. Lush greenness of flourishing vegetation. Synonyms: greenness, verdancy. 2. Green foliage. Synonym: greenery. 3. (Literary usage) a fresh, healthy, or flourishing condition.
  • vervet: An African monkey that lives in large groups in savanna woodlands and has a long tail and black face, hands, and feet; guenon monkey.
  • vulgate: 1. The everyday informal use of a language; ordinary speech. 2. A text generally accepted among experts as being the best or most accurate version; accepted version.
