Below are definitions to eight of the less common "s" nouns used in the puzzle above:

  • sestina: A type of verse form consisting of six six-line stanzas and a three-line envoy, with the last words of the first six lines repeated, in different order, at the ends of the other lines.
  • siskin: Native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa, a yellow and black finch related to the goldfinch.
  • sistrum: An ancient Egyptian percussion instrument consisting of a thin metal frame with rods or loops attached that rattle when shaken.
  • sosatie: A kabob in South African cuisine, consisting of curried or spicy meat grilled on a skewer.
  • stabile: An abstract sculpture made of wire, metal, or other materials and attached to fixed supports. (Stabile is also an adjective meaning: in a fixed position; in chemistry, physics and biology: resitant to change.)
  • sutler: An archaic term for someone who follows an army and sells food and supplies to the soldiers. Synonyms: provisioner, victualer.
  • syboes: Scottish green onions.
  • sylph: 1. A slender and graceful young woman or girl. 2. An imagined female creature that supposedly inhabits the air.
