Below are definitions to seventeen of the less common "k" nouns used in the puzzle above:
- kagu: A large flightless bird, native to the island of
New Caledonia in the southwestern Pacific.
- kaiten: A conveyor belt used to display food to diners in
some Japanese restaurants.
- kaka: A parrot, native to New Zealand; it has greenish
brown feathers and a long gray beak.
- kame: A ridge of loose material (stone fragments and silt
etc) that is worn away from rocks, oftentimes by a melting glacier.
- kana: Either of two systems of symbols representing
syllables, used in Japanese writings.
- kaolin: A fine white clay used in the manufacture of
ceramics, porcelain, and in medicines as an absorbent substance. (Derives from
a French form of a Chinese word meaning "high hill".)
- kapok: A silky fine fiber, which grows around the seeds
of a tropical tree, used as stuffing and padding material for cushions, soft
toys, and et cetera.
- kappa: The tenth letter of the Greek alphabet,
represented in the English alphabet as "k".
- kauri: 1. Tall timber tree of New Zealand having white
straight-grained wood. Synonyms: Agathis australis, kaury. 2. A strong
light-colored wood distinguished by fine speckling, used in boat making,
cabinetry and carvings. 3. Resin of the kauri trees of New Zealand; found
usually as a fossil; also collected for making varnishes and linoleum.
Synonyms: kauri copal, kauri gum, kauri resin.
- kava: 1. An herbal medicine made from the dried roots and
rhizome of a bush of the pepper family. Used to relieve anxiety and improve
sleep. 2. An alcoholic drink made from the roots of a bush of the pepper
family. (Sometimes called kavakava.) 3. A Polynesian bush of the pepper family
whose root and rhizome are the source of kava.
- kepi: A French military hat with a circular flat top and
a visor. Synonyms: peaked cap, service cap, yachting cap.
- kerf: A cut made by an ax, saw, or other cutting
tool.
- kersey: A smooth woolen cloth.
- kestrel: 1. A small North American falcon. Synonyms:
American kestrel, Falco sparverius, sparrow hawk. 2. A small Old World falcon
that hovers before swooping on its prey of small mammals.
- kibitka: 1. In Russia, a covered sled or wagon. 2. A felt
tent used by the Tatars. 3. A family of Tatars.
- kine: 1. Domesticated bovine animals as a group,
regardless of gender or age. 2. A plural noun meaning cows or cattle.
- kirk: A Scottish church.
