Below are definitions to eight of the less common "j" nouns used in the puzzle above:

  • jabiru: The name for two different storks, one a large tropical stork native to Central and South America, with white feathers and a bald head, the other a large black and white stork, native to India and Australia. (Note: the proper noun, Jabiru is the name of a town in Australia's Northern Territory.)
  • jacana: A water bird with short rounded wings, and long toes that enable it to walk on floating plants; native to the tropical and subtropical areas; wading bird.
  • jak: A large greenish bulbous East Indian fruit produced by the jackfruit tree. The immense fruits resemble breadfruit and can weigh up to sixty pounds.
  • jarl: A medieval Scandinavian nobleman; derives from the Old Norse word for "earl".
  • jerkin: 1. A sleeveless coat or jacket. 2. A tight sleeveless and collarless tunic, worn by men in the 16th and 17th centuries.
  • jetfoil: A high-speed, jet-powered, passenger boat.
  • jimmies: 1. Bits of chocolate used as a topping, (for example on ice cream). 2. Pieces of candy sprinkles.
  • jota: The traditional dance of Aragon; a fast Spanish dance performed with castanets in 3/4 time, usually to voice and guitar accompaniment. (Castanets are small curved pieces of hard wood or plastic, joined together and used to make a rhythmic clicking sound.)
