Below are definitions to twelve of the less common "d" nouns used in the puzzle above:

  • dabber: A pad used by printers to apply ink.
  • dado: 1. The lower part of an interior wall, when it is finished differently from the rest, usually with panels, paint, or wallpaper. 2. A rectangular groove cut into a board so that a matching piece can be fitted into it to form a joint. 3. In architecture, the part of a pedestal that lies between the base and the surbase.
  • dahl: 1. A tropical wood herb with showy yellow flowers. 2. Small highly nutritious seed of the tropical pigeon-pea plant.
  • dariole: 1. A type of pastry filled with cream, custard, or jelly. 2. A small cup-shaped mold in which individual portions of a dish can be cooked and then served.
  • dekko: In British slang, a quick look or glance.
  • delft: Earthenware pottery usually finished with a white glaze and blue decoration. Derives from the city Delft in the Netherlands known for its earthenware.
  • dhaba: A roadside stall where food is sold.
  • didi: In South Asia, didi is often used as a form of address for a person's older sister or female cousin. Also, used as a form of address for an older woman.
  • dobbin: A large plodding horse; a farm horse.
  • dojo: A school that teaches judo or karate.
  • ducat: Formerly a gold coin of various European countries.
  • dulcimer: A string musical instrument played with lightweight hammers or sometimes by plucking, used in American folk music; a zither.
