Below are definitions to ten of the less common "a" nouns used in the puzzle above:

  • abaca: A large plant, native to the Philippines and related to bananas, from which Manila hemp is produced; used for rope, paper et cetera.
  • aegis: In Greek mythology, the shield of Zeus or Athena; the word has developed in modern usage to mean "the protection, backing, or support of someone. Synonyms: auspices, protection.
  • alameda: A public promenade shaded by trees, esp. in the Southwestern United States.
  • albedo: The ratio of reflected to incident light, or the fraction of light hitting an object that is reflected by that object, especially a planet reflecting the Sun's light; light reflected by a planet. Synonym: reflective power.
  • amaretti: Small crisp Italian cookies flavored with almonds; almond cookies.
  • ambit: An area in which something acts or operates or has power or control. The extent or limits of something. Synonyms: boundary, compass, orbit, range, reach, scope.
  • appanage: 1. A grant, by a sovereign or ruling body, of resources to maintain a dependent member of a ruling family, especially a source of revenue set aside for children, or land given by a sovereign for the maintenance of a younger member of the royal family 2. Any customary and rightful perquisite appropriate to your station in life.
  • apsis: 1. Either of the two points in an orbit that are nearest to and farthest from the center of gravitational attraction 2. A domed or vaulted recess, or projection on a building; same as "apse".
  • ashlar: 1. A thin slab of squared stone, used for facing walls or for special purposes in building. 2. Masonry using rectangular slabs of squared stone as facing material.
  • avatar: 1. The manifestation of a Hindu deity in human, superhuman, or animal form, especially one of the incarnations of Vishnu. 2. Somebody who embodies an idea or concept. 3. A new personification of a familiar idea. 4. A movable three-dimensional image used to represent somebody in cyberspace; image of someone in virtual reality. 5. In computer games, a character or persona of a player with a graphical representation.
