Triple Crown Winners The first Kentucky Derby, held in 1875 was run over a distance of one and
one-half miles, as it was through the 1895 Derby, after which it was shortened
to one and one-quarter miles, and still remains that distance today. The
Kentucky Derby is considered the first leg of the Triple Crown of Horse Racing,
the Preakness Stakes the second leg, and the Belmont is the third and final race
of the "crown". Several dozen horses have won two of the three races over the past 120 plus
years, but only 11 have captured all three. The first Triple Crown winner was
Sir Barton in 1919, followed by Gallant Fox 1930, Omaha 1935, War Admiral 1937,
Whirlaway 1941, Count Fleet 1943, Assault 1946, Citation 1948, Secretariat 1973,
Seattle Slew 1977, and Affirmed in 1978. (Gallant Fox, the 1930 Triple Crown
winner, was the sire of Omaha, the 1935 Triple Crown horse.) Horses that have won the first two races and finished 2nd in the Belmont
include: Smarty Jones in 2004, Real Quiet in 1998, Silver Charm in 1997,
Majestic Prince in 1969, Tim Tam in 1958, and Pensive in 1944.
