Presidential Trivia
- ---George Washington, the first president of the United States
of America, and the first national president in world history, set many
precedents for successive chief executives to follow. However, his formal
display of wearing a sword at his side and standing on a dais while receiving
visitors never made it onto the list of proper protocols for US presidents to
follow.
- ---John Adams, the second US president, was the first to live in
the White House, taking up occupancy there in 1800, before the structure was
fully completed.
- ---John Quincy Adams won neither the popular vote, nor the
electoral college to become the sixth US president. Instead because none of
the four candidates in the 1824 presidential election attained a clear
majority, Adams was chosen by the House of Representatives, led by the support
of Henry Clay.
- ---Franklin Pierce, 14th president of the US, tried to purchase
Cuba from the Spanish but his offers were refused.
- ---Chester A Arthur, 21st US president, carried the moniker
"Elegant Arthur" due to his stylish and stately mannerisms.
- ---Stephen Grover Cleveland is the only person (to date) to
serve nonconsecutive terms as President of the United States, having been the
nation's 22nd and 24th presidents.
- ---Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt had a boxing ring installed in the
White House during his tenure as the 26th US president.
- ---William Howard Taft, after serving as the nation's 27th
president, went on to serve the US again as chief justice.
- ---Three US presidents are well known in history by their
initials -- FDR, JFK, and LBJ -- Franklin Delano Roosevelt, John Fitzgerald
Kennedy, and Lyndon Baines Johnson, respectively.
