- add Determine the sum of, by combining numbers.
- algebra The mathematics of generalized arithmetical
operations, in which symbols (usually letters) represent unknown numbers in
mathematical equations.
- average (See below: mean)
- axis A straight line through a body or figure that
satisfies certain conditions.
- calculus The branch of mathematics that is concerned with
limits and with the differentiation and integration of functions. Calculus
studies such concepts as the rate of change of one variable quantity with
respect to another, the slope of a curve at a prescribed point, and the
calculation of the area bounded by curves.
- circle Ellipse in which the two axes are of equal length;
a plane curve generated by one point moving at a constant distance from a
fixed point.
- cube root A number that when multiplied three times
equals a given number.
- cubic Three-dimensional.
- denominator The divisor of a fraction. The denominator is
the bottom number of the fraction, which indicates the number of parts into
which one whole is divided. The top number is the numerator.
- division An arithmetic operation that is the inverse of
multiplication; the quotient of two numbers is computed. In division, how many
times one number is contained in another number is determined.
- divisor The number by which a dividend is divided. For
example, 10 divided by 2 = 5; 10 is the dividend, 2 is the divisor, and 5 is the
quotient.
factor 1. Any of the numbers (or symbols) that form a product
when multiplied together. 2. One of two or more integers that can be exactly
divided into another integer. Synonym: divisor. 3. An independent variable in
statistics.
- formula 1. A standard procedure for solving a class of
mathematical problems. 2. A group of symbols that make a mathematical
statement.
- geometry The pure mathematics of points and lines and
curves and surfaces. Geometry deals with the space of shapes and sizes.
- graph A drawing illustrating the relations between
certain quantities plotted with reference to a set of axes.
- infinity Without end.
- integer Any of the natural numbers (positive 1, 2, 3, ...
or negative -1, -2, -3, ...) or zero. Synonym: whole number.
- inverse Opposite. (Multiplication and division are
inverse operations.)
- logic A system of reasoning.
- mean An average of n numbers computed by adding some
function of the numbers and dividing by some function of n. For example, the
mean of a set is calculated by adding the numbers in the set together and
dividing their sum by the number of members of the set.
- multiply Combine by multiplication. (Multiplication is an
arithmetic operation that is the inverse of division; the product of two
numbers is computed.)
- numerator The dividend of a fraction. (The numerator is
the top number in a fraction.)
- pi The ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a
circle. The number 3.14159265358979323846 is pi with 20 decimel places shown.
However, pi is an irrational number, meaning the decimal places go on
infinitely without repeating or ending in zero.
- plane An unbounded two-dimensional shape.
- positive Greater than zero.
- product 1. A quantity obtained by multiplication. 2. The
set of elements common to two or more sets.
- quadratic 1. A polynomial of the second degree. 2. An
equation in which the highest power of an unknown quantity is a square.
- ratio The relative magnitudes of two quantities (usually
expressed as a quotient).
- set An abstract collection of numbers or symbols.
- sign A character indicating a relation between
quantities.
- square root A number that when multiplied by itself
equals a given number.
- subtract Make a substraction. (Subtraction is an
arithmetic operation in which the difference between two numbers is
calculated.)
- sum 1. A quantity obtained by addition. 2. A set
containing all and only the members of two or more given sets.
- theorem A proposition deducible from basic
postulates.
- variable 1. A quantity that can assume any of a set of
values. 2. A symbol (like x or y) that is used in mathematical or logical
expressions to represent a variable quantity. (In mathematics, a variable does
not have a fixed numerical value. A quantity that does have a fixed value is
called a constant.
- zero A mathematical element that when added to another
number yields the same number. The fundamental arithmetic properties of the
number 0 are: a + 0 = a,a - 0 = a, and a x 0 = 0, in which a is any number;
and 0/b = 0, in which b is any number other than 0. Division by 0 is not
defined and therefore is an inadmissible operation
