The Appaloosa, which is used in the puzzle above, is a hardy breed of saddle horse, characteristically having a spotted coat. The Appaloosa, enduring and easily trained, was developed in western North America by the Nez Perce as an all-purpose horse. It was used particularly by the Nez Perce on buffalo hunts. The Appaloosa was crossed with the quarter horse. Quarter horses were the first all-American breed, originating in 17th century Virginia, and were the most common working mount of cowboys. Quarter horses respond well to their riders, a trait the Appaloosa shares.

The Clydesdale, another horse used in the puzzle above, is a heavy feathered-legged breed of draft horse originally developed in Scotland during the 18th century. Known as a working horse, the Clydesdale was developed from crossing Flemish draft mares with Scottish draft stallions to produce a larger size animal. This line was then crossed with a black high-stepping Flemish stallion that had a wide white stripe down its face. Brown and bay are now the dominant colors of the impressive heavy horse which also characteristically has the white stripe on the face, white hooves and white lower legs. In the US, the Budweiser Clydesdales are well known, having been a symbol for the Anheuser-Busch brewing company for 75 years. The first Budweiser Clydesdales pulled a carriage hauling a case of Budweiser to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, as a personal gift from August Busch, in celebration of the repeal of Prohibition.
