Roses have been around for millions of years, but documented cultivation has been known for only about the past 3000 years. There are 150 known species in the world and countless hybrid varieties of those species. Some roses are woody stemmed shrubs and others are scrambling, climbing, prickly vines. Almost all roses are deciduous, losing their foliage in the winter, and most require at least two months of winter chill to induce dormancy which is necessary for proper bud formation.

Some varieties are more difficult to grow than others, but the majority of roses are hardy plants that can be beautifully maintained with the proper site planning and cultivation. Most easily grown in a temperate climate, roses like at least one half day in sunlight, with the roots planted in slightly acidic soil, with good ventilation but protected from strong winds. Pruning encourages the formation of new growth and planting in the a ventilated area without overcrowding will help to eliminate pests and disease problems from the start.
