Birds of North America Word Search (Puzzle 1 of 2)

The term flycatcher is applied to several families of birds not closely related. One group is a variety of large American birds and another is a group of small songbirds. Both groups share the characteristic of catching insects on the fly, thus the name flycatcher.

Birds from the tyrant flycatcher family are the most common type of flycatchers in North America, with the kingbird and phoebe being two of the best known individual species. The phoebe is one of the first birds to return in the spring and often nests near human dwellings, making it visibly familiar to nearby humans.

All flycatchers are passerine birds, meaning they are perching birds that generally living near the ground and have four toes for gripping a perch. The majority of passerine birds are songbirds. Other passerine birds besides the flycatchers include the crows, finches, nightingales, swallows, tanagers, warblers and wrens, to name but a few. There are almost 5800 (known) diverse species of passerine birds.

Fun Fact: The nuthatch is the only tree-climbing bird that also moves head downward along the tree. Nuthatches are also passerine birds.
