North Carolina Sports Trivia (Re: 24 Across)
The North Carolina Tar Heels men's basketball program has a rich and storied tradition. UNC won their first NCAA championship in 1957 against another college powerhouse, Kansas. However, it was not their first NCAA championship game appearance; they played in the championship game in 1946, losing to Oklahoma A&M in a close one.
North Carolina follows UCLA, Kentucky, and Indiana with the most all-time NCAA Championships and is currently (January 2009), tied with UCLA for the most Final Four appearances in history. The Tar Heels have also had tremendous success in their conference, winning the ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference), conference title 26 times.
Among the dozens of players to go on from the UNC basketball program and play in the NBA were Hall of Fame members: Larry Brown, Billy Cunningham, Bob McAdoo, and James Worthy; and current and recent players: Vince Carter, Raymond Felton, Brendan Haywood, Antawn Jamison, Rashad McCants, Jeff McInnis, Jerry Stackhouse, Rasheed Wallace, Marvin Williams, and Brandan Wright. And of course the most famous Tar Heel of all -- Michael Jordan.
UNC continues to produce a fair lot of the top players in the nation including current star tyler Hansbrough. The 6'9" power forward led UNC in scoring as a freshman in 2005-2006. On December 18, 2008 he passed Phil Ford on North Carolina's all-time career scoring list with the bulk of his senior season still in front of him.
