Did You Know? (21 Across) Steve Spurrier, "The Ol' Ball Coach", created an enduring legacy in sports history as the head of the Florida Gators football team from 1990 through 2001. Under his leadership, Florida was a perennial conference champion in the tough SEC division of the NCAA and National Champions in 1996. South Carolina fans expect the same results now that Spurrier directs their football squad.
As most sports fan know, the Heisman Trophy is awarded each year to the most outstanding player in college football. What some younger fans do not realize, is that "The Ol' Ball Coach", was himself an outstanding college player "back in the day" and the winner of the 1966 Heisman Trophy as the quarterback of the Florida Gators. After his college career, Spurrier went on to play in the NFL for ten seasons. Other famous recipients of the Heisman have included Doak Walker, Paul Hornung, Roger Staubach, Jim Plunkett, Archie Griffin (twice), Tony Dorsett, Marcus Allen, Vinny Testaverde, Barry Sanders, Charles Woodson, and Carson Palmer, just to name a sampling.
Visit the official web site of The Heisman Trophy for more information, including a complete list of past winners.
