College Football Trivia

Stanford and Michigan played in the first college football post season bowl game in 1901. Michigan won 49-0. This game which became the annual Rose Bowl beginning in 1916 is college football's oldest bowl game.

In addition to numerous other college football bowls, to date, the University of Michigan Wolverines have played in twenty Rose Bowls, winning eight of the contests. The Stanford Cardinal football team has competed in twenty bowl games, twelve of which were Rose Bowls, (winning five of the Rose Bowl games).

Both universities have a long storied football tradition, with Michigan claiming the most wins of any team in NCAA Division I-A football history and producing such individual historical greats as Dan Dierdorf, Crazy Legs Hirsh, and George Allen, along with current NFL stars Tom Brady, Braylon Edwards, and Charles Woodson, among a host of others, both past and present.

The Stanford Cardinal has also produced its fair share of standout football players, both past and present including three quarterbacks taken in the first round of the NFL Draft -- Bobby Garrett, 1954 Cleveland Browns; Jim Plunkett, 1971 New England Patriots; and John Elway, 1983 Baltimore Colts.
