The Boston Red Sox won the first edition of the modern World Series in 1903, (as the Boston Americans), five games to three over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Boston, as the Red Sox, took the crown again in 1912, 1915, 1916, and 1918. The franchise had five World Series crowns to their credit, before their (current day), AL East rivals, the New York Yankees, made their first appearance in 1921, losing to the (NL) New York Giants. The Yankees and Giants faced each other in three consecutive World Series, 1921, 1922, and 1923, with 1923 being the first victory for the Yankees.

Since that first appearance of the Yankees in the series in 1921, they have participated in 39 of the fall contests, winning 26, far surpassing the Boston Red Sox. However, of the two teams, the Sox are the most recent champions, capturing the crown in 2004, and again in 2007. Speculation among sports pundits abounds as to which of the two AL East rivals will be the first back to the fall classic.
