Sports Trivia Baseball historians postulate, with good reason, that the 1927 New York Yankees is the greatest team in baseball history. The 1927 lineup, known as Murderer's Row, posted a .307 team batting average, thanks to Tony Lazzeri's .309 BA, Bob Meusel's .337 BA, Earle Combs and Babe Ruth, both at .356, and Lou Gehrig with a whopping .373 batting average. Ruth hit 60 home runs that season and Gehrig belted 47, while knocking in a league-leading 175 RBI. Combs led the league in hits with 231. To complement the bats on Murderer's Row, the pitching staff boasted six double-digit winners, led by Waite Hoyt, (22-7, 2.64 ERA). The Yankees easily swept the Pirates to win the 1927 World Series. |
